i bought an item online from a supposed uk company they have a uk presence, a uk phone number, address, and has no mention of any overseas presence . i got a phone call from dhl this afternoon informing there was like 20 quid's worth of import duty on an item from hong kong. at first i mentioned i hadn't ordered anything from hong kong, then he read the company name and i connected the dots. i still see no mention on their website of a hong kong office, nor that any of their goods come from there. upon checkout, there was no mention of having to expect to pay another 20 % of the item's value at the border. i declined to pay it, as the item was fairly expensive as it was.what are my rights with the online retailer in terms of getting a refund? i'm certain that there's an act which deals with returning unwanted items for a full refund within 7 days of delivery or something, but is there something more about the retailer neglecting to mention that a they're not actually in the UK, and b ship items from hong kong so you should expect to pay an extortionate amount of import tax?

Actually i send a package from India to Greece by FedEx. i wrote it's value around EURO180. now Greece customs apply EURO 190 as a import duty. consignee refuse to pay that amount. i also don't want to pay that amount. FedEX saying if consignee doesn't pay the amount then automatically you'll be charged whether you want refund that product or not. kindly help me how to leave that product without paying any extra amount.Thanks samir

I am looking to buy some electrical goods from China, with a value of around 160.I understand that if the items are declared correctly I WILL be doing this that royal mail, will hold the item, and send me an invoice of the import tax, PLUS an 8 handling fee.Am I able to inform and 'pre pay' the import tax, to prevent this holding process, and removing the 8 handling fee?Also, I assume the charge would be 20 % of the total? Do I pay import duty on postage costs? or just the items themselves?Thanks for any advice you may have.
