Anyone out there run a small business bookkeeping service? What kind of rates should be charged on average?
I am considering my starting my own service as a second income. I would focus on small businesses in my area. I have a good background as a staff accountant in a multi divisional corp, as well as financial sales and costs analysis. However, I am unsure of the income potential and what the norms are in terms of charges to my potential customers. Obviously, I don't want to over charge. Thanks
Small business bookkeeping, accounting, billing?
I am in the process of starting a small business, residential drafting and construction services. I have mostly done work for family and friends but I have recently starting getting jobs from others by word of mouth. I know how much to bill per job but I dont know how to professionally as far as invoices, other fees etc. Is there any software out there that can teach me this per my industry or any good reference books? Would it be worth hiring someone to teach me?

Keep in mind that price is important. As of right now I don't have employees or too much inventory but that will hopefully change eventually.
MySQL or spreadsheet for small business bookkeeping?
I recently partnered in a small business that has a few hundred transactions a month, and I am keeping records of sales and expenses in a spreadsheet. I am thinking about using MySQL instead of the spreadsheet, but don't know if it would be a better tool for this purpose, or if it is worth the time it will take for setup. I considered QuickBooks, but we do most of our transactions on PayPal, and it won't download the complete information, and so I would have to manually edit transactions.Anybody have any experience with this?
